This is manipulation. A Yle poll discussed under what conditions Ukraine should be granted EU membership. According to its results, more than 80 per cent of the candidates for the European Parliament believe that Ukraine should not be admitted to the EU without meeting all the conditions. That is, it is not a question of whether Ukraine should be admitted to the union at all, but whether Kyiv should be given exceptional conditions for EU membership.
Some Russian media outlets as well as online users are spreading information, citing the Finnish news service Yle, that the vast majority of candidates for MEPs do not agree to admit Ukraine to the EU.
«MEPs do not want to see Ukraine in the EU, and they promised, just as they promised to Moldova,» some net users commented on the news.
Indeed, on 2 June, the Finnish news service Yle published the results of its poll, which it conducted on the eve of the elections to the European Parliament. However, the data, which is circulating online, was significantly distorted.
The mentioned survey nowhere states that the overwhelming majority of candidates for the European Parliament do not agree to admit Ukraine to the EU. In fact, the survey was about the conditions under which Ukraine should be granted EU membership. Thus, according to the Yle poll, more than 80% of the candidates to the European Parliament believe that Ukraine should not be admitted to the EU without meeting all the conditions. That is, it is not a question of whether Ukraine should be admitted to the Union at all, but whether Kyiv should be given exceptional conditions for membership in the EU. They argue their position by saying that «the country should be a stable democracy and a state governed by the rule of law with an efficient market economy that will allow it to cope with economic challenges and competition in the EU».
At the same time, 17 percent of respondents believe that Ukraine can be accepted as a member of the EU even if it does not meet all the requirements.
«Ukraine is in a completely exceptional situation because of the war, and if the war drags on, we cannot know in advance what will happen. I think it is important to give Ukraine a signal of hope that we will do everything possible for its victory and that the membership issue will be resolved as soon as possible,» said MEP candidate Maria Guzenina.
It should also be noted that according to a report by the NATOpoll project, 42 per cent of voters believe that Ukraine could be accepted as a member even if not all the requirements are met.
Earlier, StopFake denied disinformation that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy allegedly made an ultimatum demand to the Europeans and set a date for the EU to accept Ukraine.
