On social media and Russian websites (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) information about the US allegedly permitting Ukraine to strike new Russian territories is being widely spread. According to the Russian media, this was allegedly stated by the White House strategic communications coordinator John Kirby. ‘Washington allows the Ukrainian Armed Forces to conduct military operations with the aim of seizing Crimea, the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions,’ reports RIA Novosti.
In reality, such statements are another one of Russian propaganda’s fakes. Moreover, according to international law, there are no new Russian territories. The propagandists are talking about the Ukrainian territories illegally occupied and annexed by Russia: Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions. The Ukrainian military has every right to conduct any military operations in these territories to liberate them.
Additionally, the Russian media constantly note that the White House representative did not mention Ukrainians repeatedly shelling Kursk, Bilhorod and Bryansk regions. Therefore, they separate the actual Russian regions from ‘newly acquired territories’, which, as they understand themselves, are not a legal part of Russia.
