On March 30th Russian TV channel “Vesti” reported reported, that the Crimean Tatar autonomy is not territorial autonomy. They refer to Deputy Prime Minister of Crimea Rustam Temirgaliev, who argues that it is solely about preservation of the identity of the indigenous population of the peninsula. He said that we should not be afraid of the term, it is defined, and, supposedly, there is a corresponding federal law about national-cultural autonomy.
The issue is that Temirgaliev used the term “national-cultural autonomy” instead of “national-territorial autonomy”, which was actually discussed.
However, the official website of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People published the text of Resolution of VI Kurultaj of Crimean Tatar People “On the implementation of the Crimean Tatar people’s right to self-determination in their historical territory – in the Crimea”. It says about territorial autonomy.
The first paragraph of the resolution defines the following:
“1. Announce the beginning of political and legal processes of creation (restoration) of national-territorial autonomy of the Crimean Tatar people in its historic territory – in the Crimea. ”
