This video is a manipulation. It takes out-of-context footage from the ICTV channel’s Nadzvychayni Novyny (Breaking news) program aired on December 23, 2021, which discussed the expansion of the list of professions for which women aged 18 to 60 must register for military service. Currently, according to Ukrainian law, only women in the medical and pharmaceutical fields are required to register for military service. However, mobilization remains voluntary for them, as it does for other women.

In recent weeks, a one-minute video has been actively spread online, claiming that Ukraine has supposedly passed a new law requiring all women aged 18 to 60 to register for military service. The video shows the caption: «Will women be mobilized?» and the host says: «Well, girls, line up! Ukrainian women are now required to serve just like men.»

Social media users reacted emotionally to this segment, leaving comments like: «This is total extermination of the nation! It’s no longer about defending the country!», «Now even women are afraid to go outside… children will be sent to the store», «What did you expect? The men will run out, only women and children will be left—it’s just a matter of time».

In the video from the ICTV program Nadzvychayni Novyny (Breaking news), host Viktoriya Senyk reports on a new decree requiring women aged 18 to 60 to register for military service. The video also features correspondent Yuliya Khyzhnyak trying on military uniforms.

However, this video does not reflect the current situation—Ukrainian law does not mandate the compulsory mobilization of women.

StopFake has confirmed that the video circulating online is part of a segment from the December 23, 2021, episode of Nadzvychayni Novyny, which discussed the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense expanding the list of professions and specialties for which women aged 18 to 60 must register for military service.

The segment was deliberately taken out of context, with a portion showing the host stating that Ukrainian women had allegedly become liable for military service on the same terms as men. She also expressed doubts about the state’s readiness to implement such decisions. This creates a misleading impression that Ukrainian legislation has been amended and will soon lead to the mobilization of all women.

It’s also worth noting that new episodes of Nadzvychayni Novyny stopped airing on ICTV in the summer of 2022. Correspondent Yuliya Khyzhnyak, mentioned in the video, according to her resume, finished her work at ICTV in March 2022.

Most likely, this video clip began to spread widely online after it was posted on TikTok by a user @staff_word0. As of now, the post has garnered over 26,500 likes and more than 3,000 comments.

In Ukraine, the issue of women’s military registration and mobilization is currently regulated by Law No. 2664-IX «On Amendments to Article 1 of the Law of Ukraine “On Military Duty and Military Service” Regarding the Registration of Women for Military Service», by orders from the Ministry of Defense, and since May 18, 2024, by the new Mobilization Law. According to Ukrainian law, women in the medical field are required to register for military service, while women in other professions can do so voluntarily. It is important to note that registration does not mean automatic mobilization; it is necessary for the General Staff to have an understanding of the number of medical professionals in reserve. The mobilization of women, including those in the medical field, in Ukraine remains entirely voluntary.
